Historical links between Slovak and Czech power and their nuclear industries are among the closest in all of Europe.
Therefore, both partners of construction of the new nuclear power plant at Jaslovské Bohunice site, i.e. the JAVYS Company and ČEZ Group, are connected by a common rich history. The nuclear power industry in Slovakia and in the Czech Republic was built on a basis of the integrated nuclear program of the former Czechoslovakia. So until 1993 the Czech and Slovak Republics had a common power system.Both countries were building pressurized water reactors together (Jaslovské Bohunice, Dukovany, Temelín, and Mochovce). Up to now, both countries have a similar structure of power sources, legal and regulatory environment and, also until now persisting commercial and personal links which present attributes that can be utilized fully within the construction project of the new nuclear power plant currently under preparation.
A1 Nuclear Power Plant at Jaslovské Bohunice site
The era of nuclear power industry was started in the former Czechoslovakia in August 1958 by the construction of the prototype A1 Nuclear Power Plant in Jaslovské Bohunice, which was equipped with a KS 150 heavy water type reactor and used natural uranium as a fuel source and was cooled by gaseous CO2. The Unit was in operation since October 1972 until February 1977. Since February 1977 the Unit has been decommissioned. At present the A1 NPP is undergoing the Decommissioning Stage II Program.
V1 Nuclear Power Plant at Jaslovské Bohunice site
The construction of V1 Nuclear Power Plant with VVER 440/V 230 type reactors was launched in Jaslovské Bohunice on 24 April, 1972.Unit 1 of V1 NPP was put into trial operation in December 1978 and Unit 2 was put into trial operation in March 1980.Resulting from Slovak Government’s Decree No 801/1999 and as a condition of EU-accession agreement, Unit 1 of V1 NPP was decommissioned definitively on 31 December 2006 and Unit 2 – on 31 December 2008. 12. 2008. At the present, V1 NPP is undergoing the Decommissioning Stage I Program.
V2 Nuclear Power Plant at Jaslovské Bohunice site
During the course of the construction of V1 NPP, due to an assumed deficit in the power balance of Slovakia, it was decided to construct V2 NPP as Units 3 and 4 of the power plant. The construction of V2 Nuclear Power Plant with advanced VVER 440/V 213 reactors was started in 1976.
Mochovce Nuclear Power Plant
The construction of Mochovce NPP started in June in 1981. The NPP project was planned as four operating unit construction. Unit 1 supplies electricity to the power grid since the summer of 1998 and Unit 2 two years later, both units with pressurized water reactors of VVER 440/V-213 type. Construction of Units 3 and 4 was suspended in 1992 and re-started in November 2008. In 2009, the plant managed to generate over 7 TWh of electricity during a one year period for the first time in its history.
Two nuclear power plants are operated in the Czech Republic, at Temelín and Dukovany sites. Both power plants are operated by ČEZ.
Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant
The nuclear power plant was commissioned with full power in 1987.It supplies more than 12 milliards kWh of electricity in the Czech distribution grid each year. It means that each fifth lamp in the Czech Republic is powered by this nuclear power plant.
Temelín Nuclear Power Plant
A decision on Temelín NPP construction was made in 1980.According to a decision of the Federal Government made in 1990, only two of four planned Units of Temelín Nuclear Power Plant were completed. In 1993, the Czech Government approved definitively a completion of all four Units of Temelín Nuclear Power Plant. Currently, the construction of these units is still in progress.
